How can you talk about Benin without mentioning "vodoun" or "voodoo"? Yes, Benin is indeed the cradle of Vodoun, a religion that responds to the four elements of the cosmos: water, earth, air and fire! Vodoun is said to have originated from the meeting of the traditional cults of the Yoruba gods and the "Fon" and "Ewe" divinities, during the creation and expansion of the Fon kingdom of Abomey in the 17th and 18th centuries. Unfortunately, for a long time, this religion (no longer Beninese or African, but South American, since it was exported with the outreatlantic slave trade) was confused with other practices. Contrary to popular belief, witchcraft and black magic are not part of Vodoun, even if it has to be said that the practitioners of this religion are the same ones who apply these practices!
